Dong Quai has been used extensively for hundreds of years in Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine for the female reproductive system. In Europe Angelica was planted in gardens or kept in cupboards as it was thought to be one of the only herbs that witches never used, and its presence was considered a defence against charges of witchcraft. Some of its primary uses have included dysmenorrhoea, amenorrhoea, and symptoms related to menopause. Some of the properties that have been attributed to the herb include anti-inflammatory and tonic to the female reproductive system. It also has mild laxative properties.
In addition to its use in female reproductive conditions Dong Quai was also used during the 17 th century for respiratory ailments. According to the Doctrine of Signatures (the old philosophy that the appearance of a herb can give some indication to its healing benefits) plants that are hollow-stemmed such as Dong Quai, were considered beneficial to the respiratory system. This is not an indication that it is commonly used today.
