Spirulina is the most nutritious whole food on the planet. Spirulina (arthrospira platensis) is an algae that grows naturally in soda lakes in equatorial regions, and grown using aquaculture for human consumption. The spirulina is grown in shallow ponds in freshwater made alkaline by the addition of soda, this alkaline environment only allows the spirulina to thrive. When mature the spirulina is gathered from the ponds and dried, and supplied to you in powder and tablet form nothing added and nothing taken away except the moisture. Spirulina contains many pigments which may be beneficial, including beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, chlorophyll-a, xanthophyll, plus the phycobiliprotein c-phycocyanin. Spirulina contains about 60% complete protein containing all essential amino acids, though with reduced amounts of methionine, cysteine and lysine when compared to the proteins of meat, eggs and milk. It is, however, superior to typical plant protein, such as that from legumes. Spirulina's fat content is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and also provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Spirulina contains vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), and vitamin E. Spirulina is also a source of potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium and zinc.
